Archaeology Opportunity for the Summer

SIU-Carbondale has extended a free opportunity our local teachers:

Teachers have an opportunity to participate in an archaeological dig at Miller Grove, IL, an abandoned African-American community suspected of being part of the Underground Railroad in Southern Illinois. Included in this professional development opportunity is a follow-up workshop to develop place-based (or local history) curriculum with non-fiction/informational sources aligned with the New Illinois Learning Standards. This project is sponsored by a partnership between the Library of Congress, Southern Illinois University, and the US Forest Service.

Teachers participating in the dig will need to meet at the Shawnee Community College Extension Campus in Anna, IL at 9am, Tuesday, June 14 to caravan to the site. The activities for the day will be done by 3:30pm. A follow-up workshop working with related sources to develop curriculum will be held at the Extension Campus building in Anna on Thursday, June 16 from 9am-12pm.

PD hours for each portion of the excursion will be available.  You can sign up for the dig only or the dig and the follow-up workshop.

Time is limited:  Please sign up by June 8, 2016 at www.educationregistration.org/roe45
