MOCHE Munchies - March 2021

Each month, the Missouri Council for History Education will publish “MOCHE Munchies”: brief introductions to online resources and upcoming events related to history education. We hope you’ll browse and imbibe!

WHAT WE’RE READING

  • Rumor on the street is that February’s discussion of Caste: The Origins of Our Discontent by Pulitzer Prize- winner Isabel Wilkerson went long into the night as participants pedagogy-partied down. Join us for the last and final discussion of the book (and some thoughtful criticism) March 30. Check the website for the Zoom link here and tell your friends! You don’t need to have attended previous discussions to join us for this one.

  • Looking to think historically, but, well, time is limited? Check out B. Erin Cole’s comic, I Am a Historian I Make Exhibits and then head on over to the Center of the American West’s webinar with Cole on March 10. All part of the Center’s series, Historians Imagine: Creativity in the Craft. More information and registration (It’s free!) here.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO

  • Did you know that the federal government spends approximately $50 per student per year on STEM fields and approximately 5 cents per student per year on civics? Are you wondering how we can invest more in history and civics and overcome ideological divides? Well, it just so happens that so has the Educating for American Democracy Institute. They’ll be launching their curriculum with a forum March 2. Check it out here.

  • Speaking of bridging divides, Saint Louis University’s Women’s Studies Department will be hosting their annual bridge lecture March 4th. (February = Black History Month; March = Women’s History Month; Bridge Lecture = Black Women’s History). Join guest Dr. Ashley Farmer who will be discussing the legacy of early twentieth-century human rights activist Queen Mother Audley Moore.

  • And, well, we know we’re filling up your March 10, but National Council for History Education is hosting Sarah Vowell y’all! Yes, Sarah Vowell! That Sarah Vowell -- author of The Partly Cloudy Patriot, The Wordy Shipmates and all sorts of other great essays that make us laugh out loud. Have a humorous March 10 and tune in for B. Erin Cole AND Sarah Vowell – why not? You’re worth it.

WHAT WE’RE LISTENING TO

  • Our friends over at the Challenging History Collaborative hipped us to these two stories on the history of enslavement in St. Louis from St. Louis On The Air. What’s up with local history in your corner of Missouri? Drop us a line and you might just see it in next month’s MOCHE Munchies.

WHAT’S ON THE HORIZON FOR APRIL

  • Well, this April 1 FREE online workshop, “Who Was Adolf Hitler Before He Was an Anti-Semite?” for one. All part of MOCHE’s visiting scholars program.

  • And the National Council for History Education Conference, of course! April 8-11. Who’s gonna be there? Only Harvard Professors Annette Gordon-Reed, Phil Deloria, and Laurel Thatcher Ulrich; MOCHE’s own Joan Musbach; and yours truly, of course. See you there.
