One-Day Seminar: Westward Expansion
October 5, 2018 | 8:00AM - 2:30PM
Schumacher Station on the Trails | 5912 E. Bannister Rd. | Kansas City
The program is FREE! Lunch will be provided. Certificate of continuing education hours will also be provided to all attendees.
Join teachers from Kansas City and surrounding areas for a day-long Seminar on Westward Expansion, using a collection of original documents to explore the people, places, ideas, and themes of the early to mid-19th Century growth of America. Early expansion, in the Jeffersonian era, as well as that which took place under and related to Jackson, will be addressed, as well as how the institution of slavery complicated territorial expansion, eventually leading to the Civil War. All participants will be provided with a printed copy of the primary documents reader in advance of the program, and digital copies of the reader and agenda are available at the link below.
TeachingAmericanHistory.org Seminars are conducted as Socratic discussions, facilitated by one of our graduate faculty. There is no pre-determined end, nor ‘take-away,’ nor lesson plan, or associated pedagogy. This program will provide teachers with an opportunity to engage in deep discussion with their peers, relying on a collection of primary source documents, with the goal of enhancing content knowledge through those documents.
Discussion Leader: Dr. Dennis Boman
