Importance of Racial Pedagogical Content Knowledge in Teaching History
Rob Good and Shante Lyons, from Ladue Horton Watkins High School, presented at the 2016 Annual MOCHE Conference in Hannibal, MO.
Understanding the history and present reality of race and racism is a necessary component for a well-educated citizen. However, teachers often feel unprepared and are reluctant to address racial history in their classrooms. The presenters discussed the value of Racial Pedagogical Content Knowledge (Chandler, 2015) as a means by which teachers can become more adept at promoting a critical, compassionate and democratic discussion of race and racism in their history classrooms.
